Small business owners globally are redefining their ambitions, prioritizing stability and predictability over rapid growth. According to Mastercard's inaugural Dreamonomics report, 68% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) now value controlled momentum, with 54% actively avoiding unnecessary financial risk.

The findings are based on a global survey of more than 6,000 SMEs across 18 countries, conducted by Hypothesis on behalf of Mastercard. The report examines how business owners handle growth, digital tools, and cyber protection. Mark Barnett, Global Head of SMEs at Mastercard, said the owners are not choosing between ambition and caution. They seek growth that is more predictable, protected, and easier to manage.

Stability Beats Speed

The core finding is a shift in mindset. A majority of SMEs are choosing a measured path. Beyond the 68% prioritizing stability, 61% are focused on deepening existing customer relationships rather than reaching as many new customers as possible. This controlled approach extends to digital adoption.

SMEs already use an average of five digital business tools. Yet, 89% want to adopt more, and 78% say integrated tools are critical. This makes digital simplification a growth issue, not only an operational one.

Global Perspectives on Growth

The report highlights distinct regional attitudes. In Latin America, 74% of SMEs value stability over fast growth, including 76% in both Argentina and Brazil. European SMEs connect business success to personal life, with 67% prioritizing work that supports their health and relationships.

In Asia Pacific, 63% share that focus on life quality, while 76% of SMEs in Indonesia prioritize stability. The Middle East and Africa show the highest adoption of some new technologies. In that region, 43% of SMEs use AI or machine learning to automate workflows, and 42% use cybersecurity tools.

North America leads in business card adoption, with 51% of SMEs using them exclusively compared to a 46% global average. There, 59% of business card users are interested in premium solutions.

Digital Tools and Cyber Protection

Cybersecurity is emerging as a key concern and potential growth enabler. While 71% of SMEs say protection from cyber threats is a priority, only 37% currently use cybersecurity tools. Interest in artificial intelligence is high, with 70% excited about its potential. Specifically, 41% see AI's promise in fraud and security protection.

To address these needs, Mastercard is launching the Mastercard Collection for Business. This suite of benefits is available to holders of certain World and World Elite business debit and credit cards. It is designed to help SMEs propel growth, protect against risk, and power payments.

The collection includes three pillars. Business Growth offers upcoming AI-powered productivity tools and networking experiences. Business Lifestyle provides travel and entertainment benefits like airport lounge access. Business Security gives automatic access to My Cyber Risk, a dashboard that identifies online vulnerabilities.

Mastercard plans to extend the Dreamonomics insights into in-market events. The company will support local businesses around major gatherings like the TCS New York City Marathon and the Australian Open. The goal is to help firms turn influxes of visitors into opportunities, not operational strain.

The report shows that as small businesses grow, they need more than just payment processing. They seek an integrated system of insights, tools, and solutions that support daily realities while preparing for what comes next.
