BMO launches Mastercard-embedded virtual card payments
BMO is the first Canadian bank to deploy Mastercard Embedded Commercial Payments, enabling corporate clients to manage virtual card transactions.

BMO has become the first Mastercard issuer in Canada to offer embedded virtual card payments for corporate clients. The new capability, launched through Mastercard's Commercial Express framework, allows eligible BMO Commercial Card clients to initiate and manage payments directly within their existing enterprise software.
This integrated solution targets the growing demand from small and midsize enterprises for streamlined financial tools. About 80% of both small and middle-market firms plan to upgrade their embedded finance capabilities within the next 12 months, according to a PYMNTS Intelligence report.
How the embedded payment model streamlines corporate workflows
The embedded payment model integrates virtual card payments into core business systems. Clients can execute secure payments for supplier invoices, travel, and corporate expenses without switching between applications.
The system is designed for treasury, procurement, and accounts-payable leaders. It offers precise controls over spending parameters. Automated reconciliation data is provided. This improves working capital efficiency.
By embedding payments into enterprise resource planning, procurement, accounts payable, and travel management systems, the bank aims to reduce payment complexity. Seth Blacher, head of TPS product management and payments modernization at BMO, noted the driver behind the move. "As our Corporate Card clients digitize their operations, they expect us to integrate seamlessly into their existing workflows," he said.
Industry momentum drives adoption of embedded finance tools
Adoption of embedded finance is accelerating across the business spectrum. The same industry report that highlighted SME plans also found strong uptake among larger corporations. About 63% of large firms intend to upgrade their embedded finance capabilities within the next year.
This broad trend shows a shift toward integrated financial experiences. Businesses of all sizes are seeking to eliminate friction in payment processes. They want enhanced visibility and control directly within the platforms they use daily.
BMO’s broader commitment to SME and EMM banking needs
The launch complements BMO's recent initiatives aimed at small and midsize enterprises. In April, the bank debuted a platform specifically for SMEs and emerging middle market customers. That platform focuses on providing commonly used payment options and delivering clearer cash flow visibility.
Diane Miquelon, senior vice president of financial institutions partnerships at Mastercard Canada, highlighted the partnership's significance. The collaboration aims to meet the sophisticated needs of modern corporate clients who require both security and convenience.
Eligible clients in Canada and the United States can now access the embedded Commercial payments capability through participating enterprise software platforms.
